1. Introduction   (To contents)

  1. This area examines how human beings learn, and use the insights of mainstream science and especially cognitive science to clarify misconceptions  (myths) that have entered the education system and prevented students and teachers from fulfilling human potential.
  2. I start by examining what is human nature, the theories that have been proposed to explain it and whether they have any evidence.
  3. I then look at the implications of these theories in a school, classroom and what happens when wrong (theories without evidence) are used as well as those that work.
  4. Finally I look at whether learning can be observed over short periods of time from 20 minutes  to a few hours  - this has important implications for lesson observations and I draw in particular from cognitive science and Professor Robert Coe’s MET study to show why it cannot. I also suggest alternatives which use a cognitive science model and in particular one developed by PiXL which I was shown recently and the graphics kindly shared with me.
